Step Parent Adoptions
Step parent adoptions are different
from adoptions of unrelated children. On the one hand step parent
adoptions usually do not change a child's living arrangements. On
the other hand, step parent adoption may affect an existing personal
relationship between a biological family and a child.
- Home studies are not necessary for
step parent adoptions.

The consent of the non-custodial parent will
be required only if that parent is a guardian of the child. The need
for consent may be dispensed with if it is in the best interests of
the child. However this is unlikely to happen if the non custodial parent
has a relationship with the child.
If step parent adoption is not
possible, another option may be to appoint the step parent a joint
guardian of the child. This will give the step parent some legal standing
with respect to the child.
